Lidia Mikhaylova

A Small Story About Growth and Trust

At my first silk painting class of the year, one of my longtime participants shared something that truly surprised me: registration for my library workshops fills up within 40 seconds of opening.

At first, I couldn’t believe it. She told me, “I called at 9:01 AM and was already placed on the waitlist. I only got into the class because someone canceled at the last minute.”

Hearing this was a real moment of gratitude and pride for me. These classes began as an idea I carefully nurtured and built from the ground up—without formal art education, without teaching experience, and while teaching in a language that is not my native one. And yet, here we are, four years later, with growing interest and returning students.

Teaching silk painting in an American environment continues to challenge and inspire me. Each class is a reminder that creativity truly transcends language and background, and that people are drawn to spaces where they feel welcome, supported, and free to explore.

I’m deeply thankful to everyone who keeps showing up, trusting the process, and sharing this creative journey with me.
